What is Sound Design ? – Sound design is a technical/conceptually creative field. It covers all non-compositional elements of a film, a play, computer game software or any other multimedia project. Sound design is ultimately responsible for all aspects of a film’s audio track, from the dialogue and sound effects recording to the re-recording of the final track.

Film and television

In film, sound design helps with the realisation of the director’s audio vision. This normally entails the creation of sound elements for unusual sources. Whilst this utilises creative skills, the process can be long and drawn out without the fundamental understanding of how sound works. A multi-instrumental musician, composer and highly qualified audio engineer, Neil has been involved with audio, music and technology for the last 20 years. Neil has numerous audio and educational qualifications to his name, including an MSc in Multimedia Signal Processing(University of Surrey), a B.Eng (Hons) in Electroacoustics (University of Salford), a Dip (Mus) Diploma of Music and a Diploma in Media Composition (Film Institute of L.A.)

The strong emphasis on engineering is what sets syncro:sound above our competitors, Neil brings a strong foundation in core audio engineering skills and techniques, which will not be found elsewhere. During his MSc, Neil specialised in psychoacoustics and spatial audio, introducing to our clients much greater services relating to cutting edge technologies and surround sound implementations.

Neil also at the world renowned Manor Mobile studios on a number of projects, including Dr Alban,Al Green, Barbara Cooke Robert Plant and Jimmy Page and The White Room for Channel 4 Music Productions. This as well as numerous recording projects for other artists, as a session player and for educational purposes.
